Chief Medical Officer - John McCarthy, M.D.

M.D., University of Washington School of Medicine
Master of Science in Counseling, Gonzaga University; Bachelor of Science, Santa Clara University

Dr. McCarthy is a native Washingtonian, born in Spokane. McCarthy has his B.S. degree from Santa Clara University; a Master of Counseling degree from Gonzaga; and, his medical degree from the University of Washington. He has been a physician for 25+ years performing full spectrum family medicine, while working in rural, multi-specialty and large and small primary care practices. In addition to his duties at the NATIVE Project clinic, he works with medical students at the UW School of Medicine in Eastern Washington, and is Okanogan County’s public health officer. Dr. McCarthy is a past president of the WA Academy of Family Physicians and, in 2014, was named Spokane County Medical Society's Physician Citizen of the Year. In 2012, Dr. McCarthy was named Washington’s Family Physician of the Year. Dr. McCarthy is committed to health, fitness and family as demonstrated when he and his teen sons took a coast to coast bike trip across the United States.

Gilbert Escandon, M.D.

Dr. Escandon is an Internal Medicine Doctor, and is the newest addition to our medical providers. He will work with our behavioral health patients. He received his medical degree from University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and has been in practice for more than 20 years. Dr. Escandon has specialized in positions in Correctional Medicine and Hospice Services.

Vinetta MacPherson, ARNP

Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP), Master of Science, Nursing, Gonzaga University
Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Gonzaga University

Vinetta is an enrolled member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe of South Dakota and lived all over the U.S. as part of a military family.  Vinetta graduated from Gonzaga University with both her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Nursing. She is a Certified Family Nurse Practitioner (ARNP). Ms. MacPherson worked as an LPN (4 years) and Registered Nurse (17 years) at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Labor & Delivery and Neonatal Intensive Care. After 21 years of nursing, Vinetta went back to school to become an ARNP. She worked at Valley Young Peoples Clinic before becoming the first medical provider hired at The NATIVE Project’s Clinic in 1999. She has been an ARNP for 22 years (and worked in the medical field for 43 years) and is well known and respected in the Indian community.  Vinetta loves horses, her family and the Spokane community.

Geoffry Mwangi, DNP

Doctor of Nurse Practitioner (DNP), Oregon Health Sciences University
Bachelor of Science, University of Wisconsin Madison

Geoffrey is a Doctor of Nurse Practitioner (DNP) and graduated from Oregon Health Science University in June, 2014. Geoffrey completed his clinical rotations at Willamette Health, Kaiser Permanente, Salem Hospital and Chemawa Indian Health Unit in Oregon. He did his undergraduate degree work at the University of Wisconsin.  Geoffrey is originally from Kenya, Africa and is fluent in three different languages—English, Swahili and Kikuyu. Geoffrey is a National Health Service Corp (NHSC) Scholar and we are extremely grateful he chose to do his payback at the NATIVE Project Clinic.  His interests are running, spending time with his family and providing humanitarian health services to under-served and minority communities in the U.S. and Africa.
